Chapter 3: Shadows in the Static...—
The air in Millfield was thick with something more than just the summer heat. It clung to the back of your throat, a metallic tang like the static before a storm. The town had been awake for days now—no one could remember the last time they’d slept. The streets, usually alive with the hum of late-night TVs and distant laughter, were now eerily silent.
By the third night, the first whispers started. Not the kind you hear in a crowded diner or at the gas station. These were the kind that slithered into your ear when you least expected them. A voice in the dark. A shadow where there shouldn’t be one.
At first, people dismissed it. Sleep deprivation does strange things to the mind. But then the hallucinations got worse. A woman swore she saw her dead husband standing at the foot of her bed. A teenager claimed the walls of his bedroom were bleeding. And then there was the radio.
The static had been there since the blackout began. A low, hissing hum that never quite faded. But now, buried beneath it, there were voices. Not just any voices—whispers in a language no one recognized. Some said it was Latin. Others swore it was something older.
The town’s doctor, a man named Harold Voss, tried to rationalize it. "Mass hysteria," he called it. "The brain under extreme stress will invent patterns where there are none." But even he couldn’t explain the things people were seeing.
Like the man who swore he saw a figure standing in the middle of Main Street at 3 a.m. A tall, gaunt thing with hollow eyes. It didn’t move. Just stood there, watching.
Or the woman who claimed her reflection in the mirror wasn’t hers. That when she turned away, it kept staring. And when she turned back, it was smiling. A slow, deliberate smile.
By the fourth night, the town was unraveling. People who had been neighbors for decades were now eyeing each other with suspicion. Some said the whispers were coming from the blackout itself. That the experiment had opened something.
Then came the screams. Not the kind you hear in a nightmare. These were real. Raw. Desperate.
A man named Daniel Carter was found in his living room, clutching his head. He kept screaming about "the voices in the walls." When the sheriff arrived, Daniel was babbling about something "watching him from the shadows." Then he just… stopped.
His eyes went blank. And he never spoke again. Just sat there, staring at nothing. The doctor called it catatonia.
But the rest of the town knew better. They knew the blackout had done something to them. Something irreversible. And as the nights stretched on, the hallucinations only grew worse.
By the fifth night, people started seeing things that weren’t there. Shadows moving on their own. Figures in the corners of their vision. And the whispers—oh, the whispers were everywhere now.
Some said they were coming from the blackout itself. That the experiment had opened a door. And whatever was on the other side was getting in. One by one.
The town was losing its grip. And no one knew how to stop it. Because the worst part wasn’t the hallucinations. It was the fact that some of them… might not be hallucinations at all.
The blackout had turned Millfield into a place where reality was a fragile thing. And the longer it lasted, the more that reality was slipping away. Leaving only the whispers. And the things that whispered back.
