Chapter 2: Secrets in the Sand...—
The tide pulls back, leaving behind a skeletal shoreline of bone-white coral and the faint, salty scent of something older than the ocean itself. Nikumaroro. An island that doesn’t appear on many maps, but it appears in dreams.
They say the ghosts here don’t speak. They whisper. And if you listen too closely, they might just whisper your name.
Amelia Earhart’s last known transmission crackled over the radio like a dying ember. "We must be on you, but cannot see you—fuel is running low." Then—silence. But not the kind of silence that comes from an empty sky.
The island remembers. The island knows. And if you stand on its shores at dusk, when the light bleeds into the horizon, you might hear it too.
A woman’s voice, faint as a breath against your neck. "We’re here." Then nothing.
The search teams came. They came with their metal detectors and their dogged determination, their theories and their maps. But the island doesn’t give up its secrets easily. It teases. It lures. And when you’re least expecting it, it swallows you whole.
The bones they found were never identified. A woman’s shoe, too small for a man. A sextant, its brass tarnished by salt and time. A fragment of a plane, its metal warped by the elements.
But the whispers— those were different. They didn’t come from the ground. They didn’t come from the water. They came from the air itself. Like a voice carried on the wind, or a memory that refuses to fade.
The locals won’t go near the island at night. They say the spirits are restless. They say the ghosts are waiting. For what? For who? No one knows.
But if you listen— really listen— you might hear it. The faint, metallic hum of an engine, the distant cry of a woman’s voice, the sound of wings cutting through the dark.
And then— silence. The kind of silence that lingers. The kind that makes you wonder if you imagined it all.
But the island remembers. And it’s watching. Always watching. Waiting for the next soul brave—or foolish— enough to step onto its shores.
The whispers don’t lie. They never do. And if you’re listening now, if you’re hearing this, then maybe— just maybe— you’re already part of the story.
The island is waiting. And it’s hungry.
Chapter 3: Whispers in the Waves...—
The tide pulls back, revealing bones. Not the bones of fish or the bleached ribs of some long-dead turtle, but something smaller. Something human. The island breathes around me, the wind carrying whispers that aren’t quite words. Nikumaroro remembers.
I’ve come to this place because the maps say so. Because the bones say so. Because the ghosts say so. Amelia Earhart vanished here. Or so the stories go. But stories have a way of sticking to places like this.
The first time I saw the island, it was from the water. A low, green hump rising from the Pacific, its edges jagged with coral. The kind of place that looks like it shouldn’t exist. Like it was dropped here by some careless god.
The locals call it Nikumaroro. The British called it Gardner Island. But names don’t matter when the land itself is watching. Waiting.
I’ve read the reports. The ones that say a woman’s skeleton was found here in 1940. A woman with a broken arm. A woman who might have been Amelia.
But the bones were lost. Or stolen. Or buried. No one knows.
The island knows.
I walk the shore now, the sand shifting under my feet like it’s alive. The trees lean in, their branches whispering. The air is thick with the scent of salt and something older. Something that doesn’t belong to this world. The ghosts remember.
They say Amelia’s plane crashed here. That she and Noonan survived. That they built a raft. That they tried to signal for help.
But the signals were never answered. Or maybe they were. Maybe someone heard. Maybe someone came.
The island is full of bones. Not just the ones in the sand. The ones in the trees. The ones in the water.
I find a place where the coral is broken. A place where the sand is disturbed. A place where something was buried. Or unburied.
The wind picks up. The trees groan. The whispers grow louder. They’re not just words anymore.
They’re a name. Amelia. Amelia. Amelia.
I dig. The sand is soft. Too soft. Like it’s been turned over before.
My fingers brush something hard. Something smooth. Something that doesn’t belong. A button.
A button from a jacket. A jacket that might have been hers. A jacket that might have been buried here. Or left behind.
The whispers stop. The wind stops. The island holds its breath. And then—
A voice. Not in my head. Not in the wind. Right beside me.
"You shouldn’t be here."
I turn. No one’s there. But the voice lingers.
The ghosts remember. And now, so do I.
